Sports can be a wonderful opportunity for kids to stay physically fit and learn teamwork. For most school sports, students are required to pass a sports physical before they can join. At Rapid Healthcare, we offer same day appointments for athletic physicals at our walk-in clinic in Bolingbrook, IL.
Sports physical or pre-participation physical examination (PPE) is required for most schools and organizations that offer athletics. The goal of a PPE is to ensure that individuals are physically able to safely play sports. While a sports physical and annual medical exam cover many of the same health checks, one should not replace another. The PPE will focus on specific concerns that could impact a player’s ability to participate in a sport.
What to Expect During a PPE
Parents with active children should expect to need to perform a sports physical every year they want to participate in athletics. College students and adults may also be required to have a sports physical before joining a team sport. During a PPE, several different aspects of the patient’s health are examined. A medical history is obtained, and the medical professional will document and obtain the following information:
- Height and weight
- Vitals – heart rate, blood pressure, etc.
- Reflex test
- Vision test
- Fitness check
- Joint and body exam
The mission is to identify any possible medical issues that could cause injury to the player. Many times, serious medical issues are uncovered during PPEs that can be addressed before they cause harm. Hernias, joint issues, heart murmurs, lung conditions and other issues may be detected and treated.
Once the sports physical is completed, our medical team will fill out the needed forms. We make it quick and simple to receive a thorough PPE on your time schedule to ensure all the athletes in your family can participate in their favorite sport activities.
